Working from a base of guitar and violin, they build layers of impressionistic, haunting audio compositions.
Motes Float Aloft is an ambient, cinematic soundtrack duo from Austin, Texas, that has been together for 18 years. To create their unique electro-acoustic sound, Nigel Jacobs and Darrel Mayers use electric violins, guitars, and a variety of home-made instruments.
In 2014 they scored a soundtrack for Georgetown Ray's full-length feature Run Away Night. The following year they composed a score for Indonesian indie film-maker Yusgunawan Marto's Law Abiding Angels, which took gold for Best International Short at the Jakarta Film Festival.
In May 2015 Motes Float Aloft started a new tradition of celebrating light sculptor James Turrell's birthday by presenting a soundscape at dusk within Turrell's Skyspace at the University of Texas (Austin). In 2016, when the duo travelled to Southern Spain to perform at the Pueblos Blancos music festival, they took a side-trip to Cádiz to present a soundscape at Turrell's Skyspace at the Fundación NMAC. Motes Float Aloft also collaborated with Hungarian artist Agnes Szikra and is currently working with data artist James Pricer.
Each year Motes hosts an annual multi-media tribute to ambient pioneer Brian Eno in a series called 'Enoscapes', featuring live music and video projections from Austin ambient music and visual arts scene. The first festival was held in 2018 at the Museum of Human Achievement. Motes released an album of music from this event in September 2019: enoscapes-1.
